Island nations struggle to access clean baseload energy due to their heavy dependence on fossil fuels. Diesel is often their primary source of energy, which is expensive, environmentally harmful and impedes energy security efforts. While conventional renewables like solar, wind and hydro are not sufficient alone for the specificities of tropical islands, Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) offers a promising solution that works 24/7, all year round and doesn’t require land use. This session, sponsored by PLOTEC – a pan-European consortium developing an OTEC structure resistant to severe weather conditions – will explore the application, benefits, and potential of OTEC for island nations.
